The Story of Our Dog Support Harness

Ginger, a golden retriever, was adopted at 8 weeks old along with her littermate Wilson.  At 4 months old, Ginger was struggling to keep up with her brother and over the next 2 months began to have trouble going up the stairs.  At 6 months, she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia and underwent a triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO) on her right hip.  We were instructed to utilize a bath towel to support her surgically repaired hip.

It was extremely difficult to control an excitable puppy with a bath towel.  Going up and down stairs was especially challenging.  We were frequently off balance and were concerned about Ginger's safety.  Nevertheless, she recovered and was a happy dog again.

She enjoyed playing with Wilson, hiking, swimming and all activities dogs love.  She would occasionally limp after playing hard, but would be fine after a few days.

In time, her occasional limp became a constant limp and seemed to worsen even after weeks of inactivity.  This time she was diagnosed with a luxating patella on her back left leg and surgery was performed once again.

After surgery a sling was provided, which was better than a towel; however, we were still unable to control Ginger. Her front legs were strong and she frequently wanted to run and jump, or dash down the stairs.  It was difficult to give her adequate support and restraint for her recovery.

We were very concerned that she may injure her surgically repaired knee, so we decided we needed a way to connect a support sling to her collar and the GingerLead was born.

The photo below shows Ginger recovering after patellar luxation surgery with an early prototype of our GingerLead dog support & rehabilitation harness.
